So I’m playing through Suikoden Tactics now…
…and I can’t help but imagine Kyril and the various Tenkai sitting around and comparing their respective traumas. I imagine it’d go something like this:
THOMAS: When I finally met my father, he pretty much told me to my face that he wanted to get rid of me. And then he disowned me.
LAZLO: I washed up on an island when I was a baby because my mother killed herself defending her country. Then I inherited the Rune that killed her. Also I might be dead.
FREY: My mother and father died in the Saddest Cutscene Ever and my sister was held hostage by a faction of ruthless assholes who (almost) succeeded in killing my beloved bodyguard and maybe-love-interest.
RIOU: The people of my hometown tried to execute me as a spy, and I landed myself in a series of increasingly dangerous and desperate situations as I fled from everything I ever knew. Then my best friend betrayed me. He might be dead, too, which doesn’t actually make me feel better.
TIR: I carry the embodiment of death on my right hand, so I have to wander around the world and stay away from people so their souls won’t be stuck inside me. Like my best friend’s is. And my dudenanny’s. And my father’s. …who I killed.
KYRIL: …my dad turned into a fish.
TIR: …
RIOU: …
THOMAS: …
FREY: …
LAZLO: That’s rough. Want some grilled mackerel? It restores HP.
KYRIL: *CURLS UP INTO BALL, SOBS*

They remind me of… fishmen sometimes, but they are fine.
Also, fishes are cheap at Island Nation. Travellers can’t be picky about food with our limited potch.
